Paddy is away this week, so in lieu of a proper episode we've cut together the first ten episodes' worth of chat about Sensations, our forthcoming film.
Episode #14 - Coming to America
We go back to the eighties again this week with a discussion of the Eddie Murphy romantic comedy Coming to America. We also spend some time talking about the Miami Connection, and the theory that there are no Americans called Simon is put to the test.
SHOWNOTES
Episode #13 - Marie Antoinette
The royal theme continues this week with a discussion of Sofia Coppola's off-the-wall punk-historical biopic, Marie Antoinette.
SHOWNOTES
Episode #12 - William and Kate: The Movie
It's our first Royal episode, and boy is it a treat! We watched the 2011 made for TV movie, William and Kate: The Movie, based on our very own, possibly reptilian, royal family. There's also a Flat Earth update (#globexit), talk of Shia Labeouf, and a fun discussion of the terribleness of the British tabloid press.
SHOWNOTES
Episode #11 - She's All That
On this episode we discuss the 1999 high school rom-com She's All That, we cast the female lead in our film Sensations, Rob talks for a long time about Paul Verhoeven, and we round it off with hypothetical situations in which foul things are consumed on pizza.
SHOWNOTES
Freddie Prinze Jr. on playing The Iron Bull
Episode #10 - The Bridges of Madison County
We made it to ten episodes! In this episode we discussed The Bridges of Madison County, a slow and lumpen nineties film starring Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood. We also discuss the truth that the earth is flat, and add a lot of stretch goals to our ongoing Sensations project, plus follow up on the previous episode.
SHOWNOTES
Clint Eastwood shouts at a chair
Episode #9 - Barefoot in the Park
In this episode we took our podcast back to the sixties and watched the classic film Barefoot in the Park, starring Robert Redford and Jane Fonda. It was recorded in the middle of the recent UK heatwave, so we somewhat deliriously ended up talking a lot about Star Wars and Daniel Day-Lewis.
SHOWNOTES
Episode #8 - Say Anything
In our ninth episode we discuss the 1989 classic romantic comedy Say Anything, which neither of us had seen before. Did we weep when John Cusack held the boom box up? We also discuss hot dog vaping, and get serious about our plan to turn The Godfather into a musical.
SHOWNOTES
Episode #7 - Easy A
In this episode we discuss the teen comedy Easy A, continuing the Emma Stone theme. It's familiar to Rob but new to Paddy, and it's all about reputations. How can we get ourselves a bit more notoriety?
SHOWNOTES
Episode #6 - La La Land
In this episode we dive deep into Paddy's problematic fave, La La Land. Rob has issues, Paddy has dreams. Can we reconcile over a doughnut burger?
SHOWNOTES
Ira Madison III on La La Land's White Jazz Narrative
Episode #5 - (500) Days of Summer
In our fifth episode we celebrate the arrival of British Summertime with a lively discussion of the offbeat comedy (500) Days of Summer, in which Joseph Gordon-Levitt wears a hoodie with a shirt and tie in approximately 60% of his scenes. Bold move.
SHOWNOTES
Episode #4 - You've Got Mail
In our fourth episode we discuss the classic 1998 film You've Got Mail. Despite it being dated, we agree that it holds up well and has some killer lines, and is a good example of Nora Ephron's screenwriting genius. Sensations expands its cast to include James Brolin, Liev Schreiber and Charles Grodin, gets itself a title sequence, and moves towards becoming a full cinematic universe. #EscapeTheHotDogMines
SHOWNOTES
Episode #3 - Bridesmaids
In our third episode we discuss the popular 2011 film Bridesmaids. Rob loves it, Paddy is less enthusiastic, but we hit some good points. Sensations gets some well-rounded background characters, and we follow up on some responses from listeners to episode 1. If you want to get in touch, email us at bigboysdontcrypodcast@gmail.com!
SHOWNOTES
Episode #2 - Waitress
In our second episode we discuss the 2007 cult classic Waitress, written by and starring Adrienne Shelly in her last film before her tragic death in an unprovoked attack. We also dedicate some time to talking about our favourite trashy TV programmes, and our film treatment, Sensations, is developed in a big way. It gets a buttery biscuit base.
SHOWNOTES
Nathan For You - Dumb Starbucks
Episode #1 - 10 Things I Hate About You
In our inaugural episode we discuss the classic teen rom-com 10 Things I Hate About You, and place it firmly in the canon of romantic comedies. Other discussions include the romance of beekeeping, and our idea for a romantic comedy pitting Guy Fieri and Adam Richman against each other in a love triangle. Open your wallets, Hollywood!
